Your patients may ask for your help in applying for Medicare’s prescription drug program. Because Medicare plans are administered through private companies, each plan will vary. Therefore, with your help, your patient will need to decide which plan best fits his or her needs.
Medicare Part D is a voluntary program, available to Medicare patients regardless of their incomes or illnesses or cost of drugs. Current Medicare recipients
are automatically eligible for the plan, but must enroll. To find out if your patient is eligible for Medicare
Part D, call Medicare at 800-633-4227. A Patient Support Coordinator (PSC) can help you with additional information.
Low-Income Subsidy Programs
Patients with low incomes who participate in the Part D benefit can apply for a low income subsidy program through Medicare. With this benefit,
qualified low-income Medicare recipients pay lower premiums, deductibles, and co-payments. Additionally, this benefit offers coverage through the gap,
known as the "donut hole," in Part D. Assistance varies with income. Your patients may need to fill out an additional application for this
benefit. If your patient is a Medicare beneficiary who was automatically enrolled in the Medicare prescription drug benefit and received a subsidy
toward premium costs this year, he or she will have to apply to receive the subsidy for subsequent years. Some beneficiaries who were automatically enrolled in the subsidy
last year are no longer enrolled in Medicaid or other federal assistance programs and therefore will not automatically qualify for the subsidy.
